Installing a Screen and Projector

Plenty of homeowners love the idea of a movie under the stars. And it’s easy to enjoy when you have an expert, outdoor home theater setup. But obviously there are a few considerations you’ll want to make before you turn your backyard into and outdoor cinema; like how you’d compensate for ambient lighting, and how your system will survive various weather conditions.

For ambient light, the best way to handle it is with a rear-projection screen. In this setup, the projector sits behind a specially-made screen that filters light through. It allows the projector to be brighter and offers a much sharper image. And it’s perfect for your outdoor spaces because it requires a little bit more space than a traditional front-projection arrangement.

If you’re concerned about harsh weather conditions, or you just don’t have the space for a traditional screen, consider screen paint. Available in high-contrast gray or classic white, this paint transforms any flat wall into the perfect place to project your pictures. Your AV installer can measure out the exact dimensions so you won’t even know it’s there when you’re watching your favorite movies.

Integrating a Sound System

Outdoor audio is different from indoor audio. Not only do the components have to be durable to survive different seasons, but they also can’t rely on the natural reflections of your spaces for pitch perfect sound. But integrating an outdoor audio system isn’t impossible, and you can even connect it to your internal system for easier control.

On a deck or patio, you can hang durable outdoor speakers that offer multiple drivers to capture every note. They look similar to your average indoor bookshelf unit, but are often cased in plastic or metal. They’re also water-tight, so you won’t have to worry about rain or snow destroying them.

In the yard, you’ll want to consider bullet speakers. Typically cased in a non-rusting metal and featuring bio-degradable materials, bullet speakers are small and offer pointed sound projection. You’ll probably end up with a few arranged expertly within your foliage to offer the full range of sound. Their primary benefit is that they are virtually invisible when hidden in your landscaping and can more accurately mimic some surround sound capabilities.
